The Department of Justice found a "significant failure" in the Uvalde police response to the 2022 school shooting that left 21 people dead, blaming it on a series of leadership, decision-making, tactics, policy, and training failures. Law enforcement officials were criticized for classifying the incident as a barricaded standoff instead of an active-shooter scenario, leading to a delayed and passive response that allowed the gunman to remain inside the school for 77 minutes. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland stated that the victims and survivors deserved better, and most officials in charge that day have already been fired or retired.
