Deadly Crackdown: Dozens Killed in DR Congo's Anti-UN Protest

The United Nations has called for an "independent" investigation after nearly 50 people were killed in a crackdown on an anti-UN protest in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The UN is urging the DRC authorities to ensure that the probe is independent and effective, and that future demonstrations are policed in line with international human rights standards. The violence occurred when soldiers prevented a religious sect from holding a demonstration against UN peacekeepers in Goma. At least 43 people were killed, with the toll potentially higher, and 56 injured. The UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC, known as MONUSCO, has faced criticism for being too passive in preventing conflict.
