International vets treat sick elephant in Pakistani zoo.

Foreign veterinarians from Austria and Egypt visited Noor Jehan, a sickly 17-year-old elephant at a zoo in Karachi, Pakistan, who is suffering from arthritis and other health issues. Her chances of survival are unclear, but she is due to undergo surgery on Wednesday. Noor Jehan and her sister have been confined to small cement cages since May 2010, according to activists. The zoo authorities contacted the Vienna-based Four Paws animal welfare group and described the elephant’s mobility problem, but they didn’t invite experts to visit until a few days ago when the issue went viral on social media.
