Lonely Elephant Mali Passes Away in the Philippines

Mali, an elephant that lived alone in a cage at the Manila Zoo in the Philippines for several decades, has died. The announcement was made by Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna, who described Mali as a prized possession and star attraction. An autopsy revealed that Mali had pancreatic cancer, and zoo officials denied accusations of neglect. Animal rights group PETA criticized the zoo for keeping Mali isolated, stating that elephants are social creatures that live in herds. Celebrities and activists had campaigned for Mali to be relocated to a sanctuary where she could be with other elephants.
