Sudan's capital, Khartoum, has been transformed by a military power struggle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who jointly staged a coup in 2021 but came to blows over plans for an internationally-backed transition to civilian rule. The clashes have cut water and power to much of the city, damaged and closed hospitals, and left many civilians trapped in their homes or stranded. The violence has affected the capital for the first time, with air strikes, shelling, and gun battles ripping across the city day and night, despite repeated promises of ceasefires.
