Sudan teeters on the edge of a devastating civil war

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that Sudan is on the brink of a "full-scale civil war" as clashes between rival generals continue in the capital, Khartoum. The conflict between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has already resulted in thousands of deaths and millions of people being displaced. The fighting erupted after a military coup in 2021, derailing hopes for a peaceful transition to democracy following the removal of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir in 2019. The violence has also spread to the western region of Darfur, where ethnic tensions have escalated, leading to further atrocities and displacement. The UN has condemned the violence and called for an end to the disregard for humanitarian and human rights law.
