Honduras Implements El Salvador-inspired Tactics to Combat Gangs in Prisons

Honduran authorities conducted a prison sweep, reminiscent of El Salvador's tactics, in an effort to crack down on gangs following a recent massacre of female inmates. Inmates were forced to sit half-naked in tight rows while their cells were searched for contraband. The military police, who now oversee the nation's prisons, found weapons and ammunition during the operation. The sweep comes after a pool hall shooting that killed 11 people, which authorities believe may be related to the prison violence. The crackdown has raised concerns about human rights abuses but has garnered support from communities affected by gang violence.
