Singapore Continues to Execute Drug Traffickers Despite Calls to Halt Executions

Singapore has executed a 37-year-old man for trafficking 1.5kg of cannabis, despite a last-minute attempt to reopen his case based on DNA evidence and fingerprints. This is the second execution in three weeks and has raised concerns about the country's use of the death penalty for drug offences. Under Singapore law, trafficking more than 500gm of cannabis can result in the death penalty. Last year, Singapore hanged 11 people, all for drug offences, and drug policy reform group Harm Reduction International found that there were at least 285 executions for drugs worldwide in 2020.
