Singapore Executes Two Citizens in Three Weeks for Cannabis Trafficking Despite Calls to Halt Executions

Singapore has executed another citizen for drug trafficking, the second in three weeks, despite growing calls to halt drug-related executions. The 37-year-old man was hanged after his last-ditch bid to reopen his case was dismissed by the court. Under Singapore laws, trafficking more than 500 grams of cannabis may result in the death penalty. Some 60 prisoners are on death row in the city-state, mostly for drug-related offenses. Human rights groups, the United Nations, and British mogul Richard Branson have urged Singapore to halt executions for drug-related offenses, but Singapore authorities insist that capital punishment remains "part of Singapore's comprehensive harm prevention strategy."
