New Giant Trapdoor Spider Species Discovered in Australia

A new and rare species of spider, Euoplos dignita, has been discovered in Queensland, Australia, and researchers say it needs protection due to the destruction of its habitat. The species belongs to the genus Euoplos and is a type of golden trapdoor spider. The researchers had difficulty identifying and naming the species due to the lack of a male specimen, which they finally found in May 2021. The species is long-lived and can grow up to 2 inches long. The natural range of the species is small and highly fragmented, and only one living specimen has been discovered so far.
