UN-led Salvage Team to Extract Oil from Decaying Yemeni Tanker

An international team is set to begin siphoning oil out of a rusting tanker, known as SOF Safer, moored off the coast of Yemen to prevent a massive oil spill in the Red Sea. The United Nations has purchased a replacement vessel to transfer over 1.1 million barrels of oil from the deteriorating tanker. The operation, which has been years in the making, aims to avoid an ecological catastrophe that could disrupt global commercial shipping. The U.N. has raised $143 million for the salvage operation, but still needs around $20 million to complete it.
