Yemen's Red Sea: Salvaging Oil from a Dangerous Time Bomb

The UN has successfully drained an abandoned oil tanker, known as a "floating time bomb," off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, averting a potential environmental disaster. The vessel, FSO Safer, was abandoned in 2015 with over one million barrels of oil on board. The UN led a fundraising effort to secure the decaying ship and transfer the recovered oil to another tanker. However, the fate of the recovered oil, majority owned by Yemeni state firm SEPOC, remains uncertain as there is no agreement on how profits from its sale will be shared among warring groups.
