Researchers in Japan are conducting a human clinical trial for a new medicine that targets the USAG-1 gene, with the aim of regrowing teeth in people who have a partial set or no teeth at all. A previous study showed success in regrowing teeth in animals by blocking the USAG-1 protein. Humans are believed to have a third set of teeth as buds, and activating these buds through gene manipulation could promote teeth regrowth. If the clinical trial is successful, the medicine could be available for general use by 2030.
