Avera Mengistu, an Ethiopian Israeli citizen, has been held captive by Hamas in Gaza for over nine years. Despite the release of some hostages in recent negotiations, Mengistu's case has been largely forgotten by the Israeli media and government. His family and the Israeli-Ethiopian community continue to advocate for his release, highlighting the discrimination and inequality faced by Ethiopian Jews in Israel. Artist and activist Michal Worke has dedicated much of her work to raising awareness about Mengistu's plight and the broader issues faced by the community.
