Tackling Anti-Black Racism on Chinese Social Media

Human Rights Watch has called on the Chinese government to acknowledge and condemn the prevalent anti-Black racism on Chinese social media platforms and take measures to promote tolerance and combat prejudice. The analysis conducted by Human Rights Watch found that major Chinese social media platforms, including Bilibili, Douyin, Kuaishou, Weibo, and Xiaohongshu, do not routinely address racist content despite their responsibility to respect human rights. Racist content targeting Black people, often created for profit, has become common on the Chinese internet, perpetuating offensive stereotypes and denigrating interracial relationships. Chinese social media platforms should remove racist content that violates their community standards on hate speech and incitement to racial discrimination or violence.
