Taliban Arrests Prominent Girls' Education Advocate in Continuing Repression.

Matiullah Wesa, a prominent activist for girls’ education in Afghanistan, was arrested by the Taliban on Monday, along with his two brothers. Wesa is the founder of PenPath, a non-governmental group that sets up mobile classrooms in remote areas of Afghanistan. The Taliban has been imposing strict restrictions on women's rights since taking over the country in August, including banning girls from returning to secondary schools and universities. The United Nations has called on the Taliban to clarify Wesa's whereabouts and release him. Malala Yousafzai and former Afghan President Hamid Karzai have also called for his release.
