"Costa Rica Declares State of Emergency as Migrant Influx Surges Towards US"

Costa Rica's president has declared a state of emergency due to a surge of migrants crossing through the country en route to the United States. The migrants come from various countries, including Venezuela, Ecuador, China, Colombia, Haiti, Yemen, and Bangladesh. In August alone, over 84,490 people entered Costa Rica through its southern border, a 55% increase compared to the previous month. The number of migrants crossing the treacherous Darien Gap, which connects Panama and Colombia, has also reached a record high this year. Costa Rica is among the countries participating in the Biden administration's safe mobility initiative, which aims to establish processing centers for migrants to apply for legal migration to the US and other countries.
