US criticized for leaving citizens behind during Sudan evacuation

The US has been criticised for evacuating embassy staff from Sudan while leaving thousands of private American citizens behind. The State Department has advised Americans to shelter in place due to the uncertain security situation in Khartoum and the closure of the airport. Meanwhile, other countries, including France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Saudi Arabia, have proceeded with evacuations of their nationals. The US has no plans to provide similar evacuations for potentially thousands of Americans still in Sudan, but has developed other options such as opening a temporary consulate in Port Sudan or utilising a nearby airfield.
