Germany's Scholz Addresses Budget Crisis and Welfare State at SPD Conference

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking at a party conference, pledged continued financial and military support to Ukraine in its fight against Russian invaders, stating that Germany must keep supporting Ukraine's defense. He emphasized that Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 had violated peace and security in Europe, and it was crucial to make it clear that borders in Europe cannot be changed by force. Scholz also addressed Germany's budgetary problems, assuring that there would be no dismantling of the welfare state despite the challenges. Negotiations on the 2024 budget will continue with coalition partners, the Greens and the Free Democrats.
