Colombian President Gustavo Petro has proposed an alliance between Latin American countries to address drug trafficking by recognizing drug consumption as a public health problem rather than a militarized issue. Petro emphasized that the "war on drugs" has resulted in immense bloodshed and pain in the region. The participating countries agreed on the need to reduce demand for illicit drugs through education, combating inequality and violence, and breaking harmful links between drug trafficking and other criminal activities. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also stressed the importance of supporting the United States in its fight against fentanyl.
