Tensions Rise as Venezuela Claims Guyana's Oil-Rich Region

Brazil is reinforcing its northern border with Venezuela and Guyana due to rising tensions over Venezuela's claim to the Esequibo region. The Brazilian military is deploying armored vehicles and additional troops to improve security and surveillance along the border. The disputed region, which is more than twice the size of Ireland, has been a source of contention between Venezuela and Guyana, with Venezuela reactivating its claim in recent years after the discovery of offshore oil and gas.
