Monica Hingston left the convent after falling in love with another nun, Peg. They moved to Australia to live as a lesbian couple but were unable to marry due to the Catholic Church's opposition to same-sex unions. Hingston challenged her cousin, Cardinal George Pell, on his homophobic views and made their relationship public. They received an outpouring of support from the LGBTQ+ community. Peg died in 2011, and Hingston found solace in an encounter with a barn owl.
