Authorities have issued evacuation orders for seaside communities near Athens as wildfires break out during a heatwave, threatening settlements and damaging houses. Gusts of wind up to 70km/h (45mph) are fueling the flames, which have spread rapidly through parched scrub and forest. Greece has been experiencing a heatwave with temperatures reaching 44C (111F), prompting the closure of the Acropolis. Although temperatures are expected to drop temporarily, a new heatwave is forecasted, increasing the risk of forest fires.
