Powerful Earthquakes Devastate Western Afghanistan, Leaving Over 100 Dead

At least 100 people have died and 500 injured after two powerful earthquakes, measuring 6.3 magnitude, struck western Afghanistan. The earthquakes, followed by strong aftershocks, caused significant damage to villages in Zindajan and Herat provinces. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that the number of casualties may increase as search and rescue efforts continue. The World Health Organization and UNICEF are providing medical supplies and assistance to the affected areas. Last year, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan resulted in over 1,000 deaths and 1,500 injuries.
