Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula hit by major volcanic eruption, spewing ash clouds for days.

Shiveluch, one of Kamchatka's most active volcanoes, has been erupting since Tuesday, spewing ash and dust over 500 kilometers northwest and engulfing several villages in grey volcanic dust in the largest fallout in nearly 60 years. The eruption continued on Wednesday, spewing clouds of dust 10 kilometers into the sky, and the area has been closed to aircraft while residents have been advised to stay indoors. The Kamchatka Peninsula, which has about 30 active volcanoes, is one of the world's most concentrated areas of geothermal activity.
