African Union's Swift Suspension of Niger Following July 26 Coup

The African Union has suspended Niger from the continental bloc with immediate effect following a coup on July 26 that overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has also imposed sanctions and rejected a proposal by Niger's military government to hold elections within three years. ECOWAS is preparing for a military intervention as a last resort, while the African Union is reviewing ECOWAS's plan of action and urging member states and the international community not to legitimize Niger's military government.
