Azerbaijan's Crackdown on Journalists Raises Alarming Concerns

Two journalists from Abzas Media in Azerbaijan have been arrested after publishing reports investigating the wealth of high-ranking government officials and President Ilham Aliyev's family. The editor in chief, Sevinj Vagifgyzy, was arrested and her home was searched, while the director, Ulvi Hasanli, was arrested on charges of smuggling foreign currency. Hasanli pleaded not guilty and alleged inhumane treatment while in custody. The arrests are seen as part of a pattern of stifling dissent and targeting critics in Azerbaijan, where independent media outlets have faced a crackdown in recent years.
