Defense Minister Urges Netanyahu to Stop Court Overhaul in Israel

Israel's defense minister, Yoav Gallant, has called for a freeze on the government's attempt to overhaul the country's judicial system, citing the massive backlash it has sparked as a threat to the country's security. Two other members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party have joined in the call to pause the judicial push, which could endanger the ability of Netanyahu's coalition to ram through the package of legislation. The coalition has proposed remaking the courts to give them more power to override Supreme Court decisions and to pick judges and justices, which opponents say is an attempt to eliminate one of the only checks on their power.
