Far-right German Politician Arrested for Nazi Salutes and Possession of Memorabilia

A member of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, Daniel Halemba, has been arrested on charges of displaying forbidden totalitarian symbols, including the Nazi "Sieg Heil" salute. Halemba, who is set to take up his seat in the Bavarian regional parliament, is a member of the Teutonia Prague student fraternity, which was raided by police in September. The party has gained electoral success in Germany, particularly in the east, despite its rightward drift and controversial statements on immigration. Germany's fraternities, known for their conservative and nationalistic views, have a long history in the country.
