Guatemala's President Affirms Support for Taiwan Amid Tensions with China.

Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei pledged his unconditional support for the "Republic of Taiwan" during his visit to the island, which comes as China increases pressure on the few countries that still maintain formal ties with Taiwan. Guatemala is one of only 13 countries with official diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Giammattei referred twice to the "Republic of Taiwan" instead of its official name, the Republic of China, and ended his speech with "long live free Taiwan". China, which views Taiwan as its own territory, condemned Giammattei's trip and advised the Guatemalan government not to take the side of the "evildoer".
