Hong Kong Crackdown on Tiananmen Anniversary Signals Repression

Dozens of people were detained by Hong Kong police on charges of "breaching public peace" during a crackdown on commemorations of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. Restrictions in Hong Kong have stifled what were once the largest vigils marking the anniversary of the bloody crackdown by Chinese troops on pro-democracy demonstrators. Commemoration of the event has become increasingly off-limits in Hong Kong since China imposed a sweeping national security law in 2020, effectively barring anyone from holding memorial events.
