Myanmar's military, known as the Sit-Tat, is smaller than commonly thought and shrinking fast due to a severe shortage of personnel. Analysts who lack reliable evidence tend to make estimates of military manpower that are far too high. The military currently has about 150,000 personnel, with roughly 70,000 being combat soldiers. At least 21,000 service members have been lost through casualties, desertion, and defection since the coup. The military is struggling with recruitment, and defections and desertions are weakening it. The military's actual size is one of its great "known unknowns."
