Japan's Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi met with his Chinese counterpart Qin Gang in Beijing on Sunday, where they discussed diplomatic tensions, including the recent detention of a Japanese citizen in China on espionage charges. The two countries are also at odds over disputed islands in the East China Sea, and tensions have been rising over Taiwan. Despite their differences, the two ministers agreed to restart trilateral talks with South Korea and to work together to achieve "a constructive and stable relationship." The rising regional assertiveness of China will likely be among the key topics discussed at this year's G7 summit hosted by Japan in Hiroshima.
