The Kremlin's domestic policy team, led by Deputy Chief of Staff Sergey Kiriyenko, has carefully vetted candidates for the 2024 presidential election in Russia, with one of the main selection criteria being age. Candidates younger than 50 were deliberately excluded to avoid raising doubts about the 70-year-old Putin's ability to lead. The Communist Party, the far-right Liberal-Democratic Party, and the centrist New People party will nominate candidates to run against Putin, while A Just Russia will endorse him. The Kremlin wants predictable candidates who won't threaten Putin's re-election goal of 80% of the vote with a turnout of 70% or above.
