Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, a senior member of Taiwan's opposition party, will visit China from March 27 to April 7, becoming the first former or current Taiwanese leader to visit China since 1949. The visit comes amid heightened tensions between Beijing and Taipei as China continues to pressure Taiwan to accept Chinese sovereignty. Ma will visit sites related to World War Two and China's conflict with Japan, as well as those related to the 1911 revolution. It is unclear if he will meet any Chinese officials or leaders, including President Xi Jinping.
