Mass shootings spark massive anti-violence protests in Serbia

Tens of thousands of Serbs have taken to the streets in Belgrade and Novi Sad to protest against gun violence following two mass shootings last week that killed 17 people, including eight children. Protesters are calling for the resignation of top government officials and the closure of media outlets that promote violence. Serbia's President, Aleksandar Vucic, has condemned the protests and accused the opposition of capitalising on a national tragedy to promote their own interests. Serbia has the highest rates of gun ownership in Europe, with about 39 out of 100 people owning guns according to a 2018 survey.
