Opposition to Indigenous referendum grows in Australia

Two Indigenous leaders in Australia have joined forces to campaign against a proposal to constitutionally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Island people. The "No" campaign, called "Australians for Unity", will be led by Warren Mundine and Jacinta Nampijinpa Price. Australians will vote in a referendum later this year on whether to change the constitution to include a "Voice to Parliament", a committee that can advise lawmakers on matters that affect the lives of Indigenous people. While a majority of Indigenous people support the Voice, others argue it is a distraction from achieving practical and positive outcomes.
