Rahul Gandhi, leader of India's opposition Congress party, has claimed that his disqualification from parliament was politically motivated. The move came after he was sentenced to two years in prison in a defamation case. Gandhi was convicted for comments he made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surname at an election rally in 2019. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the decision to disqualify Gandhi was in accordance with parliamentary laws, and criticised his party for questioning the verdict.
