Safety Chief's Indifference to Kishida Attack While Eating Eel

Japan's public safety chief, Koichi Tani, has faced criticism after revealing that he continued eating eel rice after being informed of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's narrow escape from a pipe bomb attack two weeks ago. Tani was in the Shimanto area, 250km southwest of Wakayama, where the attack took place. The incident has raised concerns about Japan's public safety ahead of the Group of Seven summit that Kishida will host from 19-21 May in Hiroshima. Some opposition lawmakers have demanded Tani's dismissal, but Kishida has defended him.
