Syrian refugee wins German mayoral race.

Ryyan Alshebl, a Syrian refugee who arrived in Germany in 2015, has been elected as the mayor of Ostelsheim in the state of Baden-Württemberg. He won 55.41% of the votes, beating two German candidates. Alshebl is the first man with Syrian roots to run for and win a mayor’s office in the state. He will start his role in June. Alshebl's victory is seen as a symbol of diversity and broad-mindedness in a conservative, rural area. However, he faced hateful comments from far-right fringe voters during his campaign.
