TL;DR

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, convicted of corruption and abuse of power, has been released on parole from a police hospital after serving a one-year jail sentence. His release, due to health issues, has sparked criticism of privileged treatment for the rich and powerful in Thailand. Thaksin, a divisive figure, has returned to his mansion in Bangkok after 15 years in self-imposed exile, with his family's Pheu Thai party currently in power.
