Five years after the UK government apologized for the Windrush scandal, thousands of people of Caribbean descent are still fighting for fair settlements. The scandal involved an immigration crackdown that improperly targeted legal residents largely from the Caribbean and other parts of the former British Empire. While the government pledged that those wrongly targeted would be compensated swiftly, advocates for the victims say that promise has gone unfulfilled. The Home Office, the government department that oversees immigration and the compensation program, has only fully closed 46% of the 6,122 claims as of April, indicating that all appeals had been exhausted.
