Around 80,000 South American migrants are currently in Guatemala and planning to head to the US-Mexico border, while thousands more are already flooding the southern border, overwhelming US Customs and Border Protection. The situation is expected to worsen when the pandemic-era restriction, Title 42, ends on May 11. Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales has called on the Biden Administration to address the issue, but has received no response. Mexico has also been working to increase its own border enforcement, with reports of a camp run by the country’s immigration officials holding around 60,000 migrants just over the border from Guatemala.
