Uruguay's Controversial Decision on Nazi Bronze Eagle

Uruguay's President Luis Lacalle Pou announced that a plan to melt a 350-kilogram bronze eagle statue, recovered from a sunken Nazi warship, and recast it into a dove to symbolize peace has been abandoned after facing criticism within his own party. Critics argued that destroying a historically significant piece is wrong, despite the Nazi links. The artist tasked with recasting the statue said he would "continue working on the construction of a symbol of peace that helps us get closer to that ideal."
