Youthful ex-minister Milatović defeats longtime leader in Montenegro election.

Jakov Milatović, a former Economy Minister and leader of the center-right Europe Now movement, has won around 60% of the vote in Montenegro's presidential runoff, defeating the long-standing incumbent, Milo Đukanović. Milatović campaigned on a pro-EU and anti-corruption platform and plans to lead Montenegro into the European Union within the next five years. Although the presidential role is mostly ceremonial, the results are expected to boost the winning party's chances in the next snap parliamentary elections in June. Montenegro has been mired in political instability, most notably last year when the government collapsed over a controversial agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church.
