Pope Francis has confirmed the canonical election of Bishop Raphael Thattil as the Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly of the Syro-Malabar Church, succeeding George Cardinal Alencherry. Mar Raphael was chosen by the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church and granted confirmation by Pope Francis. He is fluent in Malayalam and English, holds a Doctorate in Eastern Canon Law, and has held various positions within the church before being elected as Major Archbishop.
