The Jorge Newbery International Airport in Buenos Aires has become a makeshift homeless shelter for around 100 people who can't afford to pay rent due to the country's high inflation rate. Many sleep on the floor with their few possessions close by, while others beg for change at traffic lights. The poverty rate in Argentina rose to 39.2% in the second half of 2022, with inflation hitting an annual rate of 102.5% in February. The airport operator says it lacks the power to evict the homeless people, while some are choosing to emigrate to escape the situation.
