Starlink, a division of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has provided reliable internet service to remote areas of the Amazon, including illegal mining sites, allowing miners to coordinate logistics, receive advance warning of law enforcement raids, and make payments without leaving the site. Brazilian authorities have seized several Starlink terminals in Yanomami land, where illegal mining has contaminated waterways and disrupted traditional Indigenous life. While authorities are studying how to block Starlink’s signal in illegal mining areas, the lightweight, high-speed internet system has also brought positive change to the region, with residents flocking to hotels and teenagers spending hours playing online games on their phones.
