A pro-Russian network of fake Facebook and X accounts has been spreading anti-Ukraine propaganda using fake quotes attributed to celebrities like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Kim Kardashian. The disinformation campaign, believed to be run by a Russian influence operation called Doppelganger, reached at least 7.6 million people on Facebook alone. The campaign exploits loopholes in Facebook's ad verification and content moderation systems, making it harder to detect coordinated campaigns. Researchers have also found links between the campaign and Russia's GRU military spy agency. Despite previous actions taken against Doppelganger, the operators have continued their work, creating fake versions of news websites and using bot accounts to push disinformation. Meta's ability to combat disinformation on its platforms is being called into question, especially with major elections approaching in 2024.
