The approximately 12-mile route is described as "extremely challenging," and the hiker became exhausted, cold, and shocked halfway to the eruption. Tourists are being urged to think four times before attempting the dangerous trek, as the path is rough and difficult to cross. The eruption has led to the closure of the popular Blue Lagoon until at least December 28, and authorities have warned of gas pollution and freezing surfaces in the area.
